All my Applied and College classes read every day for 10-15 minutes. It is free reading time, and they do not have to produce anything. They are allowed to read anything appropriate and we provide some old magazines, the daily newspaper, novels and anything else we can think of.
One of the greatest successes so far has been the addition of 2 long boxes of comic books to my classroom reading material. Rogue Gallery Comics, our local comic book store, has been very generous and sold us the mixed comic books for an awesome price. Thanks, Shawn! My students love going through the boxes and choosing new reading material. I have to ask the students to stop reading when their time is up. I should note that I have a disproportionate number of males in my Grade 10 Applied class and Grade 11 College class and most of the students who are extremely interested in the comics are boys but that is another study...
I even had a student ask to take some comics home over the Christmas holidays to read more (music to an English teacher's ears).
Our budget included about $600 for loose comics and thanks to Shawn, we have spent well under that. Our plan is to purchase more of these as reading material for the rest of the English Department and the Spec. Ed. Department.
Just look at the selection. Who wouldn't be intrigued?
