Moving Forward in Reverse

In looking back at our initial idea about how and where comics and graphic text could fit into the curriculum I didn’t’ expect to gather the amount and magnitude of resources we currently have. The iPad Minis alone were a major addition to enhance learning. However, through extensive research, we have compiled a significant amount of graphic text that serves all levels throughout all grades. More importantly, all the materials we have and continue to create will be sustainable long into the future and benefit students for years to come. Comics and graphic text in the class is not only an idea but a movement towards engaging all students. The coming vision of a Holy Names English class will not only include Harper Lee, JD Salinger, William Golding, George Orwell, Tennessee Williams, Shakespeare, Sylvia Plath, John Dunn and Margaret Atwood, but also Jeff Lemire, Jim Henson, Darwyn Cooke, Grant Morrison, Gabriel Bá, and Fábio Moon. These strides being made in resources will not only engage students for learning, but also build an appreciation for multiple forms of literature.
